Elevation Finder — Altitude of Any Point & Trekking Route Profiles

Find the elevation of any place on Earth — tap the map, search a place, or use your GPS — and see the altitude instantly in metres and feet on a proper topographic map. Then switch to Route profile mode, tap along a trail, and get a full elevation profile chart with total ascent, descent, distance and min/max altitude — exactly what you need to judge how hard a trekking day will be.

Built for Nepal's terrain: the default topo layer shows contour lines and peaks, and elevations come from the Copernicus global terrain model — but it works for anywhere in the world.

How the route profile works

In Route profile mode, tap points along your intended path — a trekking trail, a cycling climb, a road. The tool samples up to 100 evenly spaced points along your line, fetches the terrain height for each, and draws the profile chart. Total ascent (उकालो) is the sum of all uphill sections — the number that really determines how tiring a day is; a "12 km" day with 1,500 m of ascent is far harder than a flat 20 km.

Reading the numbers for trekking

Above roughly 2,500 m, altitude sickness becomes a real consideration — the standard advice is to raise your sleeping elevation by no more than about 500 m per day once above 3,000 m. Use the point mode to check village elevations when planning overnight stops, and the profile mode to see where the big climbs fall on each day's stage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How accurate are the elevations?

They come from the Copernicus GLO-90 terrain model (~90 m resolution) — typically within 10–20 m of true ground height. On very steep Himalayan slopes a reading can differ more, and it measures the terrain, not buildings or towers.

Can I make an elevation profile of a trek like Poon Hill or EBC?

Yes — switch to Route profile, trace the trail on the topo map (contour lines help you follow it), and press "Show elevation profile" for the chart with total ascent and descent.

What is total ascent and why does it matter?

It's the sum of every uphill metre along the route — the best single measure of effort. Two routes of equal length can differ hugely: 300 m of ascent is an easy walk, 1,500 m is a serious day.

Does it work outside Nepal?

Yes — anywhere on Earth. The terrain model is global; the topo layer covers the whole world too.

Is it free? Any limits?

Free, no sign-up. Elevations come from Open-Meteo's free public API with fair-use limits — normal use (even many profiles a day) is fine.
