The four numbers everyone should memorise
100 (प्रहरी) — Nepal Police control room, for any crime, accident or urgent danger. 101 (दमकल) — fire brigade. 102 (एम्बुलेन्स) — ambulance dispatch. 103 (ट्राफिक) — traffic police for road accidents and jams. All four are free, 24/7, nationwide.
Helplines that save lives quietly
1098 (बाल हेल्पलाइन) connects to CWIN's child protection workers for any child in danger — abuse, trafficking, lost children. 1145 is the National Women Commission's खबर गरौँ helpline for domestic violence, with legal and shelter support. 1166 reaches trained mental-health counsellors — if you or someone near you is struggling, that call matters. 104 is the missing children search coordination centre.
For tourists and trekkers
The Tourist Police (1144) speak English and handle theft reports, scams and lost documents — offices at Bhrikutimandap, Thamel and Pokhara Lakeside are listed above. Trekkers should also carry their insurance emergency line and register with their embassy; in the mountains, rescue is coordinated through your trekking agency or insurer.
Utilities and complaints
1150 reports electricity faults to NEA ("no light"), 1137 takes price-gouging and black-market complaints, and 107 is the CIAA anti-corruption hotline. The Nepal Police toll-free line 1660-01-41516 takes non-urgent complaints and tips.

Do these numbers work from mobile without balance?
Yes — the short codes (100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 1098, 1144, 1145…) are toll-free from NTC and Ncell and work even with zero balance. Landline numbers (01-…) are normal calls.
What is Nepal's ambulance number?
102 nationwide. In Kathmandu you can also call hospital ambulances directly, or the Red Cross blood bank (01-4225344) for blood needs.
Which number for a child in danger?
1098 (बाल हेल्पलाइन) — CWIN's 24-hour child helpline. For a missing child, also call 104, the search coordination centre.
Is there one single emergency number like 911?
Not yet — Nepal uses separate short codes per service (100 police, 101 fire, 102 ambulance). When in doubt, call 100; the police control room coordinates with other services.
Do these work outside Kathmandu?
The short codes work nationwide and route to your nearest unit. The hospital and tourist-police landlines listed are Kathmandu/Pokhara offices.
