How to calculate VAT in Nepal

Nepal's standard Value Added Tax (VAT) rate is 13%, set by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD). Two directions cover almost every situation:

SituationFormula
Add VAT — net price knownVAT = Net × 13%
Gross = Net × 1.13
Remove VAT — total (gross) knownNet = Gross ÷ 1.13
VAT = Gross − Net

Worked example (add VAT): A shop sells goods worth Rs 1,000 before tax. VAT = 1,000 × 0.13 = Rs 130. Bill total = Rs 1,130.

Worked example (remove VAT): A supermarket receipt says Rs 1,130 inclusive of VAT. Net price = 1,130 ÷ 1.13 = Rs 1,000, VAT = Rs 130.

When to add vs. remove VAT

  • Issuing an invoice — take the pre-tax price, use "Add VAT" to work out what to charge.
  • Reading a bill or receipt — the total already includes VAT, use "Remove VAT" (reverse VAT) to find the net price.
  • Claiming input VAT as a VAT-registered business — you claim the VAT portion of purchases; use "Remove VAT" to isolate it.
  • Marking prices — Nepali retailers usually display the VAT-inclusive price, so "Remove VAT" reveals the shop's cost basis.

Nepal VAT — the basics

  • Standard rate: 13% on most goods and services.
  • Zero rate (0%): exports, international transport of goods, and specified essential items — VAT registration required, output VAT is zero, input VAT is refundable.
  • Exempt supplies: basic foodgrains, education services, health services, land & buildings and financial services — no VAT charged and no input VAT credit.
  • Registration threshold: businesses with annual turnover above Rs 50 lakh (goods) or Rs 30 lakh (services) must register for VAT with the IRD.
  • Filing frequency: monthly for most, four-monthly for small taxpayers below turnover limits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the VAT rate in Nepal?

Nepal's single standard VAT rate is 13%, applied to most goods and services. A short list of zero-rated supplies (e.g. exports) and exempt supplies (basic foodgrains, education, health, financial services) fall outside this rate.

How do I remove 13% VAT from a total?

Divide the total by 1.13 to get the net price, then subtract the net from the total to get the VAT portion. Example: Rs 1,130 ÷ 1.13 = Rs 1,000 net, Rs 130 VAT. This calculator does it for you — switch to "VAT घटाउने (Remove)".

Is subtracting 13% from the total the same as removing VAT?

No — that's a common mistake. Subtracting 13% treats the total as the net, which under-counts by roughly 1.5%. To reverse VAT you must divide by 1.13 (the VAT-inclusive multiplier), not subtract 13%.

When must a business register for VAT in Nepal?

Businesses whose annual taxable turnover exceeds Rs 50 lakh for goods or Rs 30 lakh for services must register with the Inland Revenue Department. Voluntary registration is allowed below the threshold — useful when your customers are VAT-registered businesses that can claim input credit.

Are all goods and services subject to 13% VAT in Nepal?

No. Exports and international transport of goods are zero-rated (0% output VAT, input VAT refundable), and basic foodgrains, education, health and financial services are exempt (no VAT charged and no input credit).

Does this calculator work for other countries?

Yes. The rate field accepts any percent, and preset chips are provided for Nepal 13%, India 18% and UK 20%. Enter your own rate for the EU, GCC, Singapore GST or any other jurisdiction.
