Body Shape Calculator — Find Your Body Type (Hourglass, Pear, Apple, Rectangle & Inverted Triangle)

Free online body shape calculator and body type calculator. Enter your bust, waist and hip measurements — in centimetres or inches — and instantly find whether you are an Hourglass, Pear (Triangle), Apple (Oval), Rectangle (Banana) or Inverted Triangle. The result includes the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), bust-to-hip ratio and clothing tips tailored to your shape. Works for both women and men.

The five body shapes

ShapeHow to spot it
HourglassBust ≈ Hips, waist clearly narrower (at least 25% smaller) — the classic curvy silhouette.
Pear / TriangleHips are the widest part, shoulders narrower than hips.
Inverted TriangleShoulders / bust wider than hips — athletic swimmer's build.
Rectangle / BananaBust, waist and hips are similar in size — a straight, column-like frame.
Apple / OvalWaist is the widest measurement or nearly equal to bust and hips — weight is carried in the midsection.

How the calculator classifies your shape

This tool uses the widely-cited rules from the Simmons body shape study and modern fashion-industry guides, based on ratios rather than raw measurements so it works at any size:

  • Hourglass: bust and hips within 5% of each other and waist at least 25% smaller than bust (roughly WHR ≤ 0.75).
  • Pear: hips are >5% larger than bust and waist noticeably smaller than hips.
  • Inverted Triangle: bust is >5% larger than hips.
  • Rectangle: bust, waist and hips are all within about 5% of each other.
  • Apple: waist ≥ bust or waist ≥ hips — the midsection is the widest zone.

How to measure yourself accurately

Use a soft measuring tape, breathe normally and keep the tape parallel to the floor:

  • Bust / chest: the fullest part, across the nipples, tape snug but not tight.
  • Waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually 1–2 cm above the belly button.
  • Hips: the widest point around the buttocks.
  • High hip (optional): around the top of the hip bones — useful for spotting the pear vs. spoon distinction.

Measure once, note the number, measure again and take the average. Wear thin clothing or measure over bare skin for the most consistent result.

Body shape vs. body type — same thing?

In everyday use "body shape" and "body type" mean the same silhouette classification and this calculator serves both queries. In fitness contexts, body type can also refer to somatotypes — ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph — which describe metabolic build rather than proportions. The Simmons/fashion classification used here is based purely on proportion between shoulders, waist and hips.

Why body shape matters

  • Style & fit: knowing your shape helps pick tailoring, necklines and silhouettes that balance your proportions.
  • Health signal: a high waist-to-hip ratio (>0.85 women, >0.90 men) is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk than BMI alone.
  • Fitness planning: different shapes respond differently to strength and cardio work — no shape is "better", but knowing yours makes goal-setting realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I know my body shape?

Measure your bust, waist and hips as described above, enter them in the calculator, and it names your shape based on the ratios between the three. No shape is "better" — the label is a starting point for styling and health tracking, not a judgement.

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)?

The World Health Organization considers a WHR above 0.85 for women and above 0.90 for men a marker of raised cardiometabolic risk. The calculator shows your WHR alongside the shape label so you can track both together.

Can body shape change over time?

The skeletal frame (shoulder width, pelvic width) stays fixed after adulthood — that anchors your shape. Weight gain and loss shift where fat is stored, so a rectangle can become slightly hourglass with muscle, and an apple can become a rectangle with waist-focused fitness. The basic silhouette usually persists.

Does this work for men too?

Yes — switch the Gender toggle to Male. The bust field becomes chest, and the same shape rules apply. Male frames most often fall in the Inverted Triangle, Rectangle or Oval categories; the pear and hourglass shapes are less common but recognised.

Is body shape the same as BMI?

No. BMI is a single number derived from height and weight and tells you nothing about proportions. Two people with identical BMI can have very different body shapes — that's why WHR and shape classification are useful health signals BMI alone misses.
