Word Counter & Character Counter — Count Words, Characters & Sentences Online

Count words and characters instantly with this free online word counter. Type or paste any text and watch live counts of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, lines and unique words, plus estimated reading and speaking time — perfect for essays, assignments, articles, social media captions and SEO writing.

Unlike most counters, this one counts Nepali (देवनागरी) text correctly. Nepali letters combine — "क्षेत्र" looks like 3 characters but is stored as 6 code units — so ordinary counters overcount Nepali by 30–50%. This tool uses proper Unicode segmentation, counting the characters you actually see and splitting Nepali words and sentences (।) accurately. It's the word counter that works for both your English essay and your नेपाली निबन्ध.

How to count words and characters

1. Type or paste your text in the box above — English, Nepali or mixed.
2. All counts update live as you type: no button to press.
3. Check the platform limits panel to see how much room is left for an X post, Instagram caption, SMS, YouTube title or Google meta description.
4. Use Copy text to grab your final version when it fits.

What gets counted

Words: real word boundaries via Unicode segmentation — hyphenated and Devanagari words count correctly. Characters: visible characters (grapheme clusters), so emoji and conjunct Nepali letters count as one each. Sentences: split on . ! ? and the Nepali danda (।) and double danda (॥). Paragraphs: blocks separated by blank lines. Unique words: vocabulary richness at a glance. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute (silent reading); speaking time assumes 130 words per minute — handy for speeches, presentations and voice-over scripts.

Character limits that matter

The limits panel tracks your text against the counts every writer bumps into: X/Twitter 280 characters, Instagram captions 2,200, WhatsApp status 700, SMS 160 (longer messages split and cost more), YouTube titles 100, and Google's practical display limits of about 60 characters for SEO titles and 160 for meta descriptions. The bar turns red the moment you go over.

For students, writers and creators

Students: hit essay and assignment word limits exactly — including Nepali-medium homework. Journalists & bloggers: keep headlines, standfirsts and meta descriptions within display limits. Social media managers: draft captions that never get cut off mid-sentence. Speakers: use speaking time to fit a 5-minute slot before you're on stage. Translators: compare source and target lengths for quotes charged per word.

Private by design

Your text never leaves your device — counting is pure JavaScript in your browser, with nothing uploaded, logged or stored. Draft confidential documents freely, like all our free Nepali tools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this word counter free?

Yes — completely free, no sign-up, no word limit for normal use.

Does it count Nepali words and characters correctly?

Yes. It uses Unicode text segmentation, so combined Devanagari letters (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ) count as the characters you see, Nepali words split correctly, and the danda (।) is recognised as a sentence end.

Do spaces count as characters?

Both numbers are shown: "Characters" includes spaces (what most platform limits measure) and "Chars (no spaces)" excludes them (common for typing-speed and translation counts).

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed; speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

How many characters can I post on X (Twitter) or Instagram?

X allows 280 characters per post; Instagram captions allow 2,200 characters (but only ~125 show before "more"). The limits panel tracks both live as you type.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to our server.
